WPS -MVP Half-Term by position - RIGHT-BACK

No1 Alex Scott.

Alex Scott took the gamble of leaving her beloved Arsenal (been at the club since she was 8) and native England to become a professional football player with the Boston Breakers and to improve her game. Well the gamble is paying off big time. New to the American soccer public (but not to us). Scott has been a revelation for the Boston Breakers and the WPS.

In the first half of the season the English international has cemented her position as the starting right-back for the Breakers ahead of USWNT star Heather Mitts who has been moved to Left-Back. She has kept this position by her work-rate up and down the right flank and starting dangerous attacks for the Breakers from deep or in the final third. She keeps going, never looking tired, relentless, snuffing out some of the worlds best attackers. She has been directly up against the likes Marta, Abby Wambach and Sonia Bompastor and came out on top every time. She has played every single minute of all 12 games played so far by Boston.

Equipped with good feet (ball skills), tough tackling and tremendous stamina and speed Scott has become an attacking weapon AND a solid defender for Boston. She scored her first goal of the season against the Washington Freedom in a 1-1 draw. Bringing the Breakers level in the game. Scott outpacing the Freedom defender before striking a sweet shot for the goal past GK Erin McLeod. She also has an assist and created many scoring opportunities for her teamates to take.

She has often been the best player on the park. A rarity for a defender and even more so for an outside back, quite honestly she should have been WPS player of the week not to long ago. A point noted by soccer writers who witnessed the 4 -0 drubbing Chicago Red Stars dished out to the Breakers. Scott played the full 90 mins after arriving the day before from England after an international match v Norway .She was the only Breakers player that looked fresh , trying to get her team back in the game . Breakers had 8 shots in total the whole match, only 3 were on goal. Scott had 3 of those shots and 1 on goal. The team that had many international forwards in view.

Scott has earned high praise from her Head Coach, her teamates , the fans, the sports writers ,even opposition head coaches who view her as a threat and now womans soccer insider who believe not only is she the best right-back in WPS but she is the best right-back in the WORLD. High praise indeed but if anyone can show us a better player on a consistent level we are all ears.

The American soccer public I would think now know who Alex Scott is.

Runners-up:
Keeley Dowling. NJ Sky Blue FC. Originally a centre-back Dowling has moved into the right-back role with ease.Playing in a solid backline. Consistent and steady, Dowling leads by example. She is difficult to get by. Has 1 assist and has helped Sky Blue to 4 shutouts.

Marian Dalmy - Chicago Red Stars- Dalmy has been ever present in the back four for the Red Stars. With 2 assists already this season her good service into the box is an option Chicago need to exploit more off.
